Shortcut virus are malicious program, changes files and folders into the shortcut files, and original files got hidden. Most of the time, people who don’t know how to remove shortcut virus from pendrive, they just perform a format over infected storage and loses their important data. Most shortcut virus ends with .exe, .vbs, .lnk and .ini file extensions. Shortcut virus is not removable by many anti-virus programs, if you’ll try to scan the pendrive with an antivirus, it reply “No threat detected” and it becomes really confusing. The most common virus found in USB drives is autorun.inf which keeps on multiplying, and infect computer by creating unlimited shortcuts of files, and folders.


However, the good news it’s not that hard to remove shortcut virus. In less than a minute you can easily remove, terminate, and prevent shortcut virus from your pendrive. 


Note : Make sure you’ve connected your infected USB drive (pendrive, sd card etc) with your computer or laptop. After removing shortcut virus from pendrive, copy your important data, and format the pendrive.

How to Remove Shortcut Virus

Method #1 : Remove Shortcut Virus Using CMD

Run Command Prompt as Administrator using any of the step given below.

  • Windows key + R > Type CMD & press ENTER,
  • Search CMD > Right click to CMD and Select “Run as Administrator”
  • Right click over Start button and select command prompt (Admin)


Type the letter of your removable device and a colon after it and hit enter. (example – e:)
Now type : attrib e:*.* /d /s -h -r -s . (Replace e: with the drive letter of your drive) and hit enter.



Method #2 : Remove Shortcut Virus Using Software :


Download and install USB fix in your system.
Close all programs running in the taskbar because USB fix kill all running programs and your may lose data.
Launch USB fix and tap on clean. Restart your computer after using this tool.


Method #3 : Remove Shortcut Virus Using Notepad


Open Notepad from your computer or laptop.


Copy the below code in your notepad.
@echo off

attrib -h -s -r -a /s /d Drive:*.*

attrib -h -s -r -a /s /d Drive:*.*

attrib -h -s -r -a /s /d Drive:*.*

@echo complete


Make sure to replace Drive with your drive letter. (example-f)


Now click on Save As by clicking on File tab in notepad and change the save as type to “All files(*.*)” from “Text documents” and rename it to removeshortcutvirus.bat, and save it on your desktop. Now close notepad and go to desktop and double click on the BAT file that you have just created.


All shortcut viruses from the respective drive will now be removed in couple of seconds and your original files will be back.


Method #4 : Remove Shortcut Virus Using Registry


Open the Task Manager by pressing Ctrl + Shift + Esc ,or you can also open it by a doing a Right Click on your Taskbar and then clicking on “Open Task Manager“.


In the Processes tab, scroll down to find something like wscript.exe . Click on it and click End Processes.


Open Run by pressing Win+R keys and then type regedit and hit Enter. This will open the Registry Editor.


In the top left pane of registry editor, navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run


Try to Look for the registry key odwcamszas , just right click on it and delete it.
