Sometimes you’re unable to find your important movies, music, photos and documents file on Windows 10. The main reason is that your computer hard disk is full and all the files are not properly arranged in folders. Due to this, the problem of duplicate files on Computer may occur.

You can still find your files using Windows 10 powerful search or you might want to consider a third-party tool instead. In Windows 10, many options and settings have been moved around or changed entirely. These advanced settings will allow Windows search to examine the contents of files, as well as the names. 

To turn on the file contents indexing on Windows, follow these steps :

In the Start menu, search for “Indexing Options.”
Click “Advanced.”


Switch to the File Types tab.
Under How should this file be indexed, select “Index Properties and File Contents.”

 

#1. Cortana or Start Menu : 

A quick way to find your files in your Windows 10 PC is by using Cortana search feature. By default, the Start menu searches indexed files, Bing, OneDrive, Windows Store and other online content. You can limit the search by clicking the “Filters” button and select “Documents”, “Folders”, “Photos”, or “Videos”. 

Tips : You can also use semicolon to search faster in Cortana, for example

documents: pdf files

Just replace the “pdf files” with your search term.

To improve the search results, click the “Filters” option in the menu and tap the “Select Location” button at the bottom of the menu. Windows automatically scans these folders, and building the search index it uses when you search via the Start menu.

#2. Windows File Explorer :

Head to File Explorer, by right-clicking on the Start menu icon and click on “File Explorer”. Navigate to the folder you want to search, if you want to search your download folder, open the download folder. Just type the name of the file, which you want to search in the search dialogue box at the top right corner.

If you’re searching files in C:drive or folder having big size files, you’ll see a progress bar as Windows searching all the files in the location and takes too much time. To save time and hanging problem, click the “Search” tab and choose the various options like file type, size, and properties you’re searching for.

If the file you’re searching is in non-indexed location, Windows will only search file names and not their contents. To solve this problem, click the “Advanced Options” button and enable “File Contents”.

Tips : To index more folder, click “Advanced Options > Change Indexed Locations” and add the folder you want.
